We all have at some point of our lives heard our parents or grandparents tell us that drinking water stored in a copper vessel is beneficial for our health. So is it really true or is it just a myth? Is it safe to drink out of copper? Let’s find out!

What does Ayurveda say about water stored in copper vessel?

Ayurveda says that water stored in a copper vessel balances vata, kapha and pitta in our body which are primarily the three doshas in the body.

Water is supposed to be stored for at least eight hours. The water stored is called as ‘tamara jal’ or ‘tamara water’ as the copper charges the water positively by gently leeching into the water and provides the positive properties to the water.

Moreover what is best about this water is that it never becomes stale, so can be stored for long duration of time.

Health benefits of drinking water in copper vessel:

1. Kills Bacteria:

Copper is oligodynamic in nature i.e it sterilizes the bacteria and so it destroys the bacteria especially E.coli and S.aureus (which are commonly found in environment and causes illness in our body). It also protects us from common water borne diseases like jaundice, diarrhoea and dysentery. Countries which do not have a proper sanitation system copper is known as the cheapest solution to cleaning water.

Copper rids the water of contamination so you can rest assure that the water you are drinking out of the copper is free from any kind of contamination.

2. Regulates Thyroid Gland:

Most of the people who are suffering with thyroid diseases have a deficiency of copper in their bodies. This is most commonly the case with the people suffering from hyperthyroidism (excessive thyroid hormone), but people who suffer from hypothyroidism (low levels of thyroid hormone) may also have a copper deficiency.

According to the FDA, about 12 mg/day is more than sufficient for the body to use without causing any harm. So, do not overdo the entire exercise. Drinking water twice or thrice in a day from a copper vessel is more than enough to reap its benefits.
